Asja Vološina (Esther Bol): Crime

23. 02 - 31. 12. 2023

Staged reading on the eve of the anniversary of Russia's attack on Ukraine

Tickets

Authentic documentary testimony of playwright Asja Voloshina, who left Russia because of Putin's war in Ukraine. A mosaic composed of real messages and the author's correspondence on social media, email and chat conversations with her friends, relatives, as well as trolls and complete strangers, is set in a partially fictionalised framework of her relationship with her boyfriend Ignat - a Ukrainian from Kiev who joined the army as a volunteer at the beginning of the war and with whom she lost all connection.

The play gives us an insight into the psychological state of Russians who actively oppose Putin's aggression, letting us see into their difficult life situation, revealing the disintegrating interpersonal relationships within families and among friends, the loss of security, the need to escape, whether in the form of emigration or internal exile. At the same time, it highlights the principles of brainwashing among oppositely minded Russians. He also lets the Ukrainian side speak, which may have a problematic and contradictory relationship with the so-called "good" Russians.

Asja Voloshina (Esther Bol) (1985) graduated in theatre science and creative writing from the St. Petersburg Theatre Academy, and also studied at the Moscow Institute of Journalism and Literary Creation. Her plays have been performed in more than thirty productions in Russia and abroad - Poland, France, Estonia, Romania, etc. The play The Fish Man was also staged by the Moscow Art Academic Theatre (MCHAT) in 2018. Many of her plays have been translated into English, French, Polish, German, Spanish, and have appeared at domestic and international festivals and labs. Her play Mama was part of the short list of the prestigious Moscow festival Ljubimovka in 2016. In 2022, an adaptation of Máma was staged by Czech Radio Vltava.
